Per Verbal Commits

Too bad. Thought he would work out well. Had other offers from some power 5 schools and rumors were floating around that Villanova was flirting with him.

Hmmmmm… bronco415 looks like a new poster (or yet another screen name for the man with many).  More than suspicious with the timing.

In any event, best of luck to Turner.  I felt like he was the best of last years freshman class.  It wouldn’t surprise me if he does rather well wherever his next stop is.

on April 5, 2018

Better than Vrankic???

on April 5, 2018

Yes… not to say Vrankic didn’t have promise and didn’t have some quality outings this season.  He did, no doubt.  In his limited action, I felt like Turner looked like a future leader.

on April 6, 2018

BB- Kevin had 23 personalities in Split. Might be closing in on that by next season.

on April 6, 2018

Probably need both hands to count them at this point.. maybe the running count can be next years parlor game.

on April 6, 2018

Might need both hands just for this thread

This doesn’t surprise me given lack of PT and maybe felt recruited over w/ Wertz and Eaddy. He was one of the two I thought were candidates to depart.
I had higher hopes for him but never seemed to gain Sendek’s confidence, PT dropped as season progressed. When he did play displayed decent 3pt shooting but not much else. Looked like a decent athlete but never applied it in a beneficial way.

Best of luck to Matt wherever he lands.

on April 5, 2018

Eaddy was eligible to practice, right? So Turner probably knew where he stood and figured Wertz would be ahead of him next year as well. I guess he just didn’t think he could compete and didn’t want to wait.

Maybe he’ll go to one of the many small D1s back east or a good D2.

There’s another…..  Almost 0 playing time…..

on April 5, 2018

You may as well just spill the beans….Roche is the only one who fits your description.

on April 5, 2018

Your words not mine…..

on April 5, 2018

That wouldn’t be a surprise.

Late recruit, project big man that didn’t work out. C’est la vie.

Yes, Roche… not sure if it was his choice though???????

on April 5, 2018

Might as well spill the beans that Hodge is gone as well, as he is.

on April 5, 2018

Sounds like we are imploding.  I hope that is not the case but it seems like it will be to late to attract more talent.  Very discouraging…..

on April 5, 2018

‘Imploding’ might be a bit much but certainly not an ideal way to move the program forward and supports my opinion that recruiting to date has not been what we need it to be to advance the program.
I expected one or both of Turner and Roche to depart and I doubt Sendek was caught off guard by this, as such, they were probably expecting to be recruiting to fill another spot or two this Spring/Summer.
Transfer announcements are just now picking up; I expect we will land a transfers or two and/or a Spring HS signee and hopefully including an immediately eligible (JUCO or grad) true post who can help right away so that Richards can redshirt and not be forced in to playing small minutes as a backup due to lack bodies.
But if Hodge is leaving that certainly hurts short term recruiting as it seems that was a key role for Hodge….he had a compelling story to tell….former Sendek player who had great college career and solid pro career.
Next few months will be very interesting to say the least….let’s hope for less bad news and a lot more good.

on April 5, 2018

There are a few pretty good grad transfer candidates out there. I posted about a couple of them on another thread.

I’m not buying that Hodge is out. Why would he tell a recruit before he tells Sendek?

on April 5, 2018

I’m not sure Hodge had a decision in the matter.

on April 6, 2018

Hodge’s Twitter had a retweet from ~April 2nd from someone i’m unfamiliar with with some generic ‘inspirational’ statements re: overcoming challenges and setbacks, etc.
It has since been deleted. He still lists himself as a Santa Clara coach and main page pic is of SCU’s home court.
Not sure what any of the above means, but timing just before Silverio’s announcement seems to make it related.
Wonder if he got sideways w/ Sendek in some fashion or maybe a non-basketball or family issue leading to his departure????
No announcements from SCU on any departures but that’s not surprising….slow to announce bad news if it’s announced at all.

on April 6, 2018

So he’s still listed on Twitter as a coach, the team website still lists him as the top assistant…yet you’re for some reason still thinking he’s out?

I mean I don’t know why I’m surprised what with the knee jerk crazy from this site in general lately, but this is beyond the pale. I thought Santa Clara was supposed to have smart people?

on April 6, 2018

The website still has Turner and Roche… so what?

on April 6, 2018

They were on the 2017-2018 roster.
2018-19 roster hasn’t been posted yet, shockingly.

The coaches page is not specific to season, which is as it should be. The coaches are year round employees.

Turner seems like a great kid. Sorry it did not work out.

Would love to see us get some grad transfers or JUCOs that can play right away to take advantage of KJ and Hauser’s senior year. We will have excellent depth next year at PG/SG with Eaddy being eligible. All three of those guys can shoot and handle the ball. The big question will be whether Wertz or Shaq are up to the challenge of handling the more physical and longer perimeter/wing players. Shaq is raw but he will be a good test case of Sendek developing players since he has the appropriate size and length to be a difference maker on defense eventually. Vrankic will be a year stronger. If Sendek could just land a guy to protect the rim then I would actually be quite optimistic going into next year…..but that is a big IF.

on April 5, 2018

Might not be over yet… I hear there’s another possible transfer in the works.

on April 5, 2018

Well let’s see…6 returners, i’d be surprised if any of the 3 seniors transfers and would be odd for Eaddy to transfer again so now you’re down to Vrankic and Walters….would stink to lose either, especially Vrankic.

on April 6, 2018

And Jadersten.

on April 6, 2018

Jadersten falls under the ‘3 seniors’ mentioned.
None of the 3 seniors redshirted so for them to be immediately eligible to play at a D1 school as a grad transfer they’d have to graduate in 3 years, not impossible but difficult especially at SCU. If they haven’t graduated they’d have to sit out and redshirt then play 1 season….2 years of scholarship for 1 season of play, not a good ‘value’ from a schools perspective so the players suitors would likely be limited.
In Jadersten’s case he’s now competing only w/ a very raw Richards for minutes as a true 5 so it’d seem odd (though certainly possible) for him to transfer at this stage. Now that’s based on the roster as we know it today. If Sendek is able to snag a JC or grad transfer or two of the caliber of Otchere who’s likely to nab the starting spot at the 5 then Jadersten may feel it’s in his best interest transfer.
And of course anyone can transfer down to D2 and be immediately eligible to play, maybe a consideration for Jadersten.

on April 6, 2018

You’re right, my mistake on that.

Grad transfer would be ideal. I would think SCU would be an attractive option for grad transfers. If you don’t go pro or have a good job lined up, then stay and take the GA slot and stay in grad school.

That’s too bad, I thought he would make some big strides and be an impact player down the road.

We should all be ready for a new vibe, especially after last  year.  Hodge was the recruiter for Julian and Turner so maybe that is why he is now gone, along with them.  Three solid guards and a starter at the 4 spot back, along with a reserve big and an up and coming athlete, combined with 6 new faces.  Thankfully House will not be a starter.  The three frosh to be will have to grow up fast, and then we will add three others. It is a guessing game but have heard that coaches have been all over the country/world.  We will hopefully get a few studs and get this thing going in the right direction.

on April 6, 2018

Who has confirmed that Hodge is gone? This is crazy speculation unless someone has some confirmation. Website still lists him as a coach. The top assistant, no less.

http://www.santaclarabroncos.com/sports/m-baskbl/coaches/index

on April 6, 2018

Haven’t compiled my thoughts on all this yet… but I will say that the website is updated infrequently, even more infrequently when news is bad. Even if all this is happening now it’ll be buried as the fourth headline in the news two weeks from now. That’s how they operate.

on April 6, 2018

New vibe??????  I guess that’s one way to put it, or dumpster fire might be another.  There’s still the possibility that one more transfer out might be coming shortly.

on April 6, 2018

3-4 days later, Hodge still listing himself as a coach at SCU on Twitter.

I guess he’s burying his own news haha.

https://twitter.com/follow24hodge?lang=en

This site is a joke. Worse than a sewing circle, and about as much basketball savvy.

Maybe Hodge is going to work for Arkansas. After all, he RT’ed a video about Nolan Richardson! Start the rumor! hahaha

It’s a good thing Sendek doesn’t have any more school-aged children for you all to harass like they did at NC State.
on April 6, 2018

(double post, not sure how to delete entirely, apologies)

on April 6, 2018

Perhaps he’s doing something more pressing than updating his twitter bio?

Isn’t the fact that a committed player from the same high school as Hodge (St. Raymond’s) de-committing “due to some changes there” at least suggestive that something is up with Hodge.

Insinuating that the posters here would harass children is over the line for me. Indeed, you’re the one who comes on here and stirs the pot, argues with longtime posters and insults the quality of the board. We certainly wouldn’t miss you, feel free to stop.

on April 6, 2018

Well y’all are acting like some real wackadoodles right now, reminiscent of the wackjobs at State. One poster even insinuated that Hodge was let go. Y’all have lost your heads totally over a bad season that was always going to be a bad season.

“Due to some changes there” could mean anything. Maybe it means nothing. Could be something he’s been thinking about for a while and saying “things changed” is just convenient. Maybe he’s friends with Turner. We don’t know.

What we do know is that in the several days since that tweet, there’s been nothing to suggest any changes in the coaching staff.

on April 6, 2018

So if Hodge stays I’ll go and never set foot here again assuming you would do the same if Hodge leaves… do we have a bet? I am assuming you’ll puss out like you did  the last time.

on April 6, 2018

Like I said, y’all gone wacko.

on April 6, 2018

You didn’t just say he would be gone; you said you didn’t think he had a choice — i.e. got fired.

I don’t know what is going on. Maybe Hodge is looking to move to a major conference, maybe he’s trying to be an NBA assistant. I freely admit I do not know, but either would be a good career move for him and I think Herb would support that as he always has valued developing his assistant coaches and preparing them for the futures they want. But obviously he hasn’t been fired bc if he had it wouldn’t be listed as the coach a week later, he wouldn’t be listing himself as an SCU coach on Twitter.

And I find the rumormongering about it to be pretty distasteful. All this bc some high school kid decommits. Wow. If this crowd is typical of SCU fans, I’m glad only 10 of you (or less) hang out here — even more fortunately, I suspect it’s not.

I like the positive sound of that. I hope you are right. So the three freshman-Wertz, Justice and Ducasse, perhaps along with Richards, will see a lot of playing time it sounds like. We still have Feagin and Vrankic who are good. Walters has potential and hopefully Eaddy is as good as advertised. Looks like we will have three scholarships to give for next year. The D1 transfer list and grad transfer list continues to grow, so maybe there is some hope there. A new vibe would be great-here’s hoping it happens!
