Arrested for 3 counts in SF….
Adios Lamont…. not even sure a high school would touch him now. He was always a weird duck to me. In any event, assuming he’ll be fired shortly, USD has a few solid players. Hopefully they see the light and head up north as SCU would take them in with open arms and they will be good to play right away.
Seems like Lamont doesn’t play well in February….I was just reading where he was arrested last Feb 2017 on suspected domestic violence charges too (involving his wife). I’m guessing she didn’t press charges and that’s why it was largely kept under wraps. This makes USD look bad.
They probably won’t do it as he’s on the staff under Lamont (and they will likely clear house), but they should hire Sam Scholl. I think he’d make a pretty decent head coach.
Smith was an assistant under Herb Sendek at ASU from ’08-12, and prior to that, was an assistant under Keating at Santa Clara. So while he’s USD’s coach today, this easily could have fallen on us, had it happened earlier.
Obviously, in a league that has steered clear of the FBI probe, and has largely rehabilitated its character in regard to USF’s huge scandal way back when, this is a horrible development. The FBI thing and this instance are, of course, quite different, but still. It could have been a great time to point to our league as a place where things are done on the up and up. One of our member’s was a better Karnowski performance from a national title last year. I still largely think that’s true. But, as Warren Buffet says, “it takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minutes to ruin it”. I don’t the WCC’s reputation is ruined, so to speak, but this is just horrible.
Two points make a line, so to speak, and whether this guy is criminally guilty, he should not be leading young men, least of all at institution like USD. Let’s pray he gets the help he needs, as well as the other party, and this conduct ceases. It was, apparently, not his wife, which makes it even worse, I suppose.
USD has a line of famed coaching alumni- Eric Musselman, Bernie Bickerstaff, Mike Brown, David Fizdale. They have as many NBA head coach alumni as NCAA tournament appearances. Smith was headed in the right direction on the court, and USD had a chance to gain some attention in San Diego, as SDSU just suspended a player in response to the FBI thing. Now, that’s all dust.
Slightly off topic but in the realm of horrid coaching conduct, have y’all seen what’s happening at Colorado State (local news to me)? It’s a massive trash fire, their coach has verbally abused players for years, but they let him off the hook after an investigation. Now’s he’s stopped winning, and he’s been on administrative leave for like 3 weeks. The AD has dirt on their hands, so to speak, because they knew he was a bad actor, but didn’t fire him. Now all parties look horrible. College Basketball in general has one huge and many small clouds hovering over it.
As much as I admire SCU for keeping on the straight and narrow (dumping KK and football inflamed boosters, but it is all well above board), the whole system is harder and harder to enjoy. Look at UA’s football program…. in addition to basketball. Walking the dog or getting out on a local trout stream are far more appealing than any of this, it seems to me.
