Greetings to the Bronco faithful!  Pacific fan here, myself and a Gonzaga fan put together fan based WCC prediction and analysis.  I’ve consolidated the Santa Clara picks in one thread which I’m sharing here.  If anyone here would like to share their thoughts on the Broncos it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! and good luck this season!

thank you for the link, that is some solid analysis.

We are biased around these parts and think SCU is going to make USF work for that 4th spot.

And BYU for 3rd…..  IMHO

I am extremely for breaking the Mormon glass ceiling.

USF is the only team to do it so far (2013, I think?). Our turn.

I love this quote at the end of his analysis: “they [SCU] have a history of dominating in the pay-to-play tournaments.”

So everyone in the world has predicted SCU will finish 5th.  Just because I think the vast majority of the population generally has no idea what they are talking about, I’ll say SCU finishes 3rd.  Still, 5 WCC team qualify for NCAA/NIT this season.  Gonna be a fun year.

I’m not sure what alternate universe this is where betterer is optimistic about SCU basketball but I like it.

I think it comes from the improvement we saw last year from this team…  1 bad loss of SD from the 4 spot.  We beat BYU with Mika….

Gonzaga is Gonzaga, but not as good this year.  St. Mary’s has a lot returning and I see them being a problem over all of them. (Landale) BYU has lost a lot.  We know we can beat them already.  This team seems to be more fluent than last year so hopefully, the confidence is higher…..

SF had us down about 25 points and we were 1 shot away from winning that game as well….

SCU can be 3rd!!!  Need to be at least 3rd….  Then hopefully we can get a bid to 1 of the tourneys….

They have to come to play every game!!!!

This is good stuff nojnotslar. Great job with the analysis of each team.

A couple developments since the preseason predictions came out is that Charles Minlend (USF’s leading returning scorer) is out for the season with a shoulder injury and Nick Emery’s status is unclear pending an NCAA investigation into impermissible benefits. All of a sudden, SCU’s path to that 3rd place spot is blown wide open if the guys can play their best every game.

That’s the tough part- bringing it every night.

When it’s Thursday night and there’s 200 people in Gertsen or Firestone and the opponent is battling for 7th or 8th place, you gotta win that game.

The biggest difference between SMC and GU and the rest has, to me, been ability to clean up against conference foes and very rarely slip up. BYU has slipped up far more often, and has also never won the WCC.

Intensity each night is a key, because it doesn’t seem like actual talent will be a bar to winning most games this year.

I agree that BYU’s hold on the top three slots is tenuous going into the start of the year. The Salt Lake Trib has conceded a rebuilding year attitude. BYU plays 5 of the first six at home. The game against UT Arlington (mid November) should be a good gauge  whether SCU or USF can break into the third place. Arlington beat SMC at Moraga last year, and breezed past BYU in the NIT. They play in a one bid conference, but were NCAA worthy last year. They also dominated Oklahoma is a scrimmage a few days ago. BTW, LMU opens their season at Arlington on Saturday…probably not on one of the cable feeds.

3rd would definitely be our ceiling but we’re probably one more season away. What’s our floor? Is there anyway we finish worse than 5th?

on November 10, 2017

Somehow, barring injuries, 5th would be a let-down. If we can’t handle USF for 4th, then sights for third are just smoke. But, if Emery is red-shirted, or DQed, I think BYU is in a group with Santa Clara, USF, and BYU for third. Just hope the Broncos don’t  revert to earlier seasons’ form and slip against teams they should put away.  I’m thinking about coming down from the Sierras and watch the Nevada game.

Here is the answer to your question:

I love the optimism, too, but I think that, without bona fide “bigs” (we don’t have a Bryant-type on this squad), it is a lot to ask of this team to finish 3rd. I think 5th is the most likely finish, with a chance at 4th if we bring it every night. I think a more likely scenario is that the team finishes strong and makes some trouble at the WCC tournament.
