Recruiting Thoughts

The biggest difference to me has been signing recruits with more than 2 stars next to their names. I know this is probably a combination of both Sendek and institutional support but when you google the names being mentioned on Verbal Commits or here on the board, actually seeing pictures and rankings on 247 is so refreshing.

Keshawn Justice is the 45th best SF & Trey Wertz is the 68th best SG in the country. This class is 58th in the country. Last year, SCU was ranked 111 and nabbed the 13th best Combo Guard (Turner) and the 113 best PF (Vrankic). This is bonkers, BONKERS for SCU. This of course means nothing if they don’t win/break up the triumvirate of GU/SMC/BYU but I this is the most excited I’ve been in a very long time.

(All rankings 247 composite).

I agree about winning against the Three Amigos, and possibly a push for an NIT consideration. Maybe this year is still too early, but Feagin/Hauser seem solid, and the other parts mesh well too. Maybe I’m also still too much in the ether about post season, but another 18-20 win season would be a setback, assuming the team stays healthy (big assumption???)

The schedule does not seem too hard. An upset of USC would be a huge impetus for momentum going into the WCC, and would grease future recruiting skids. But as some erstwhile politico said in one of our many dalliances overseas maybe we’re finally seeing “…the light at the end of the tunnel…”

I think this may be a step back year solely because we lose brownridge and we have to integrate a lot of freshman. However, this team has a lot of potential could pull some upsets.

Bart Torvik has us at 124th in the country. If we break top 100, I would be happy.

Agree.
For ‘17 recruits i’m excited to see if Turner and Vrankic can contribute right away. Shaq Walters has a log jam of seniors ahead of him (Caruso, Pugh, Healy) so I wouldn’t be surprised if he redshirts.
‘18 recruits…really like both Wertz and Justice. Hopefully Sendek can nab a few posts to round out the class. Verbal Commits shows us pursuing a couple 6’-8+ power forwards.

I’m excited about our recruits as well and I’m sure you know this but to play devil’s advocate… we’ll end up around the 90th ranked recruiting class which is still a solid improvement. Maybe a bit higher if we nab some of the other guys on the VC site listed though.

For reference, we’re ahead of Kentucky in the rankings as of now. Pretty sure they ended up with six 5 star recruits when all was said and done last year.

this is true. A lot of the other dominoes have yet to drop. Still, grabbing 3 3 stars a year is better than anything Keating ever did.

Refreshing to read about higher rated recruits w/ ‘P”otential…  My G-2 says the U has given  Renee and Sendek the “green” light to get the best players no matter where, including international (Europe) etc.   (Coach Ludwig was there for 10 days this summer)

The shovel for thew new facility should be in the ground by mid- summer.  So Coach is selling that hard…

IMHO, Our schedule and roster sets up well for post season opportunities.  We’d all like to have a true big – but it appears coach is landing long, fast, and lanky talent that can really go up tempo AND shoot.  Last year we had maybe 4 viable shooters…This roster has 8, excluding PUGH who is who did show some range last year…

In 2018, with the new recruits we will have 10 with Taj Eaddy eligible.  This allows coach to push a lot of buttons and have shooting options everywhere.  Defenses won’t be able to cherrypick just stopping Brownridge.  Coach believes in making the “3” will set you free and the roster has that makeup.

I feel like the “D” is the key for this year.  Stops and turnovers that generate open court, fast break opportunities – where we can maximize our talent and maybe minimize the GU and St. Mary’s big’s just pounding us in the post.

Should be the kind of basketball that’s exciting.

Lastly, it’s just a lot more fun to be talking about “upside”, potential, and taking on the WCC big 3.  Good luck to our Broncos!!

Bucking-
For 18/19 we currently have 11 (not 10) including returners and recent verbals. So still 2 scholarships not spoken for. Of course there’s always the possibility of transfers out opening up more schollies.
18/19 roster as of now:
Feagin (sr)
Hauser (sr)
Jadersten (sr)
Roche (RS soph)
Eaddy (RS soph)
Turner (soph)
Vrankic (soph)
Walters (soph)
Wertz (fr)
Justice (fr)
Silviero (fr)
+ 2 Open schollies

A young squad w/ only 3 seniors and no jrs.

Thanks 92bronc.  Not talking schollies, rather just roster players that have the “can shoot it” rep” referring to the coaches having more offensive options with the returnees and new recruits rather than just a few shooting options with the Brownridge roster.

I’m sure we’d all hope to see an up tempo style with more athletic guys that can also fill it up.

I believe we scrimmage Air Force this week, so the coaches will get a good sense of where we are talent wise and if we can afford a red-shirt this season…

Friday exhibition…..

Overall, seems like a significant upgrade in talent, at least 2 real ballers in the group.  Hopefully the other two can be developed.
