I’d lean transfer. JB and Kratch started every single game they possibly could of in their Santa Clara career. That’s a lot of experience out the window, and I don’t know who are the roster will be a leader in the new year.
A grad transfer, particularly one who has contributed on a team that wins, could help in terms of leadership- age and game experience.
Whoever it is, I like how Sendek has upgraded the talent level (on paper, performance remains to be seen). What I think this team could use is a guy who is a mismatch for the other also-rans of the WCC. A big, athletic guard, or a wing who scores at all three levels, or a two-way big man.
Injecting two solid grads with a three man recruiting class that a few sources have approved of via the eye test to our nucleus (which has some promise, I think) could make for a dynamic, fun team next year.
I get the appeal of a grad transfer, but I’d rather Sendek not go that way. Next year’s senior class is already packed with Jarvis, Kai, E, Evan, and now Henry Caruso graduating a year from now. That’s a lot of guys to replace in 2018 as it is, let alone with one more. I also just don’t see the cupboard as being as bare as I think some others do. KJ, Matt, Caruso, Jarvis, and E is a solid WCC starting five with a little improvement.
If there’s a quality center out there with 2-3 years left and a desire to get playing time, that would be my pick. By the time they see the court, E will be gone and we’ll need a true big man who can post up the next Karnowski or Mika.
