Who knows if we get any of these guys but just thought I would open a thread to post players Santa Clara is at least mentioned with.

John Rothstein: Houston Baptist transfer David Caraher tells me he’s considering Nevada, Ole Miss, Santa Clara, Rice, and St. John’s. Visits St. John’s on Friday.  (Averaged 16 pts per game as a freshman and is from NC)

Jeff Goodman: Idaho State 7-foot grad transfer Novak Topalovic told ESPN he has heard from Utah, Oregon State, Colorado, USC, Nevada, Wake Forest, Santa Clara, Pepperdine, LMU, Cal State Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara. (Went to Santa Margarita  in Orange County and I know Santa Clara has a decent number of students from there)

Update on roster In’s and Outs as of today.  Turner and Roche are moving on for reasons discussed in this forum already.  Omar Silverio has de-committed.  Speculation is distance from home etc but I feel like there’s “another” reason TBD.

The staff is thinking BIG.  Guys to slow down the freeway of layups in the middle. BroncoBob and others mention a few.  One to four weeks to work the list to get two guys in the 6’9 to 7’0 range.  I do know the focus is on transfers – not high school.

This will bring the Sendek pool up to nine.  Six adds from a combo above plus returners Vrankic, Walters, and Taj Eaddy off red-shirt.

The Nike, Addidas, and AAU prep tourney happen soon where high school talent will be showcased.

A lot of “horse” trading happening.  More info to follow..

Caraher would be a great get. Not a grad transfer, but would be well worth the wait. Is a long shot but he and Coach Gainey are both from the same town/city, so maybe? Would basically be a Caruso with 3 years rather than 1.

Whew…. glad you agree…
You get jumped on when you don’t agree with the power users of the site…..

Not sure what that’s about but whatever…

A bit more to add on this. He played in the same essentially league (private school 3A) in NC as Wertz. Was national honor society academically so would be a really good fit for the school. SCU apparently recruited him in high school also (one wonders if they cooled later on with many others). Undersized, athleticism questioned, but fundamentally sound and can shoot it or post up smaller players. My guess is he would be a 3/4 type.

Caraher….I figured he might know Wertz. Maybe a some familiarity there and player to player recruiting will help us. Played for a crummy Houston Baptist team (I think 6 wins) in a weak league but the fact he was his teams leading scorer and rebounder as a true freshmen is impressive, at least demonstrates he’s physically ready and skills adequate for D1 hoops. Going off memory from looking up his stats earlier today…16pts, 7rebs mid 30’s% shooting from beyond the arc. 6-6, 220lbs, given size and rebounding #’s guessing he’s fairly strong and physical player. My only reservation would be your ‘atheletism questioned’ statement, but can’t be that bad of an athlete to post the stats he did.

Topalovic…immediately eligible grad transfer, 7footer, stats past 2 seasons: 10+ pts, 6.5 rebounds, 1 block per game. Poor FT shooter. He’d fill an immediate need and weakness. Not as dominant of rebounder and shot blocker as i’d prefer to see but still seems like he could help. We need an immediately eligibility transfer who can play some mins at the 5 and allow Richards to redshirt. I’d hate to see Richards burn a year of eligibility playing 5-8 mins/game because of our lack of depth at the 5.

I doubt Richards is going to redshirt, regardless.

Remember when Evan Roquemore missed two free throws (was it Foster?) against “crummy” Houston Baptist, and we lost, beginning our losing streak that went all the way through the conference season (0-18)…. I do!

on April 11, 2018

Haha it was Roquemore! He was shooting like 90% from the line that season too!

I remember watching that on a brutal feed, i think HBU was ranked one of the lowest RPI teams in the country… BRUTAL

May be the worst season in Bronco history but don’t forget we beat Villanova and a UNM team that won a game in the tournament that season.

I do remember that. No doubt, the worst season in Bronco history.

Apparently Topalovic has visited Santa Clara and will visit Utah. Well at least we know SCU targeted well. Larry Krystowiak knows his bigs. Guess comes down to whether Topalovic wants a big role in a nice place, or a smaller role in a bigger conference.

Utah has two 7 footers returning (will be juniors).  So SCU has much more need at the position.  But Krystowiak has a good reputation with big men and they are a successful Pac-12 team with a big arena, practice facility, etc.  Hopefully making an impact and playing a lot are most important to Topalovic!

Sendek has also had several European players that became pros. So hopefully that track record has been mentioned as well. 🙂

Good. At least we’re in contention for Topalovic. Desperately need some size of decent quality like him or we’re going to be absolutely bullied and overwhelmed on the interior.
By stats and video on him seems to be a traditional post. Appears a bit stronger and more athletic than Jadersten, might be a good contrast to Jadersten who’s more perimeter oriented.

Caraher is going to St. Johns

on April 16, 2018

Not a surprise there. Always a longshot. Surprised some NC schools weren’t involved.

Hope to hear some good news soon.

on April 16, 2018

Might be a while. Many of the top targets have yet to pick, and I would think a lot of other players are waiting to see where those go before they lock in.
