BYU again

Can SCU stop the BYU streak over the Broncos?  My head thinks BYU 79 SCU 64, but sometimes you just have to go with your heart so I’ll say SCU 74 BYU 67.  Can someone make it 2 weeks in a row?  Last week BroncoHoops5 got the LMU score correct and walked away with a Franklin for each hand.  $100 to anyone who gets this score right.

We just don’t seem to match up with BYU very well.

Scu 81 buy 74! Brownridge goes for a season high 40.

Give me SCU 67 – The Y 65

I think the key is to slow the tempo, stop Mika w/o having our bigs foul recklessly, and have a good shooting night. I think BYU is about where Valpo or Vandy are in terms of a quality opponent and there shouldn’t be any reason on paper for a blowout aside from the fact that it so often seems to happen.

Who is a better center, Karnowski or Mika? I haven’t watched BYU much this year.

on January 25, 2017

I would say Mika overall. It’s hard to get past Karnowski’s sheer size, but I think Mika has more skill. Could go either way though.

If I remember correctly, Mika was the big time favorite for freshman of the year in conference 3+ years ago. By the end of that season, hardly a single person watching the WCC wouldn’t have given it to Jared (who indeed won it)

on January 25, 2017

I agree Mika has more skill, but the real upside belongs to Zach Collins. Karnowski reminds me of a poor man’s Arvydas Sabonis ( Domantis’ dad) later in his career, after his knees were shot. If Sabonis had played in the NBA during his salad years, he would have been up with Kareem and the other bigs of the mid 80’s. ( Sabonis was about 7′ 3″ and very agile and skilled.)

Re the BYU game, we’ve been so inured to the beatdowns, that it’s hard to even fathom a win. But the college hoops tides shifted last night  as Nova, Kansas, and Kentucky all fell ( Wildcats to the “trash” team from Tennessee, which makes Gonzaga’s win in Nashville look even better-Zags are #1 right now after last night’s results.) Anyway, as further proof of God’s enduring grace: SCU 79-BYU 76.

I’d give the nod to Karnowski… way more savvy and knows his limitations and does not exceed them.  Solid team player, and that’s hard to find in a Big.   That said, Mika is a way better athlete.  Karnowski has been there and done that.  Calm, cool, collected, and predictable in performance.  Mika is much more unpredictible, and for good and bad emotional on the floor.  They are both very good.  Mika has way more upside, and will be better than Karno is currently in 2 years when he is also a senior.

With 2 more wins this week it looks like Zags will be #1 in the country next week as tonight #1, #2, and #4 all got beat.

on January 25, 2017

Agreed, and I can only imagine Karnowski would have insane numbers if he didn’t have Tillie and Collins backing him up and taking away PT.

BYU 83- SCU 67. The last matchup was over in 5 minutes. And unfortunately the Cougs travel well to Santa Clara, this often feels like an away game :/

BYU 79 SCU 64.

I think SCU shoots better in the Leavey center than it did in Provo. Still a neutral game. 🙁

these mormons got their asses kicked by san diego, can clara really not rise to the occassion here after getting embarassed in provo?  keep turnovers low, control tempo and dont let them run.  Clara should be able to compete at home, would be lame if they get blown out again

on January 25, 2017

Agreed. Does anyone really think BYU is that much better? I think it was BDMIA that said it’s like we have a psychological issue with BYU moreso than a talent disparity and now a coaching disparity.

We will have to break the spell at some point-why not now? 81-75, Broncos. All three guards have a good shooting night.

BYU 75 – SCU 69.   Completely unscientific. Haven’t seen BYU in person. Took the averages btw each team’s scoring averages and the other’s “points against.”  Hope for a “W” but giving the edge to BYU.

Easy on the Mormon references please. Odd faith, yes. I grew up in LDS country and had the same bent for years. But I’ve met some decent people along the way. Am bringing one to the game Thursday. I hope the student body shows some class and doesn’t embarrass me or SCU.

76-71 SCU based on irrational hope.
Realist in me says a 15pt loss unless Sendek comes up w/ a different defensive strategy, 1st game we played man and rarely doubled the post and our bigs were thoroughly manhandled.

SCU is +4. I’m shocked. Obviously, I look at BYU with rosey glasses. Probably because they have kicked the crap out of us recently. Would be great to get a win.

Would love to see this Broncos team end BYU’s streak of dominance over us tonight, but I don’t think they quite get it done.

BYU 77 – SCU 71.

Have to defend the home court better than against Gonzaga. Part of building a winning culture.

SCU now underdogs by +3.5. Bettors backing the Broncos. Sad, they have more confidence than I do.

Noob is right, must play these guys tough. We haven’t played BYU tough in the regular season since they joined the WCC. We should push these guys…

on January 27, 2017

I know BYU hasn’t been that good this year, and lost @USD and should have lost @LMU, but that would be a tough one to resist if I were in Vegas.  I’d probably go max on that one (3K).  Then again, when lines seem crazy out of whack there is usually a reason.  Perhaps BYU’s starting 5 has had the stomach flu the last 2 days or Mika stumbled in the airport and broke his arm?  Or maybe my impression of SCU is too pessimistic and too optimistic for BYU?  Hope the line setters have it right and this is a close game… haven’t had too many of those vs BYU though.

on January 27, 2017

This line was too good to resist (though I hate betting against scu). I will claim all credit for the broncos winning this game after jinxing myself.

on January 27, 2017

Just saw Nick Emery is probable for the game (bruised knee), but likely to get some minutes.  Still, that line sounds too good to resist.

on January 27, 2017

Way too good to resist. Make that wager on BYU and be happy either way(well, not really, but richer!). Pray SCU doesn’t lose by 3 🙂

I’ll be having a beer pregame @ Taplands on Homestead (my pregame ritual now … makes it more tolerable) if anyone wants to join.

on January 27, 2017

Taplands new or just too expensive for me while I was in college?

on January 27, 2017

I think it’s just under a year old

Looks like Vegas had an idea what they were doing.

Need to manage the foul situation. Ndumanya is the best matchup against Mika. I would actualy consider starting Wardlow in the 2nd half and put Kratch on him just to see if you can keep from getting a quick 3rd foul on your 2 5-men. As soon as Kratch gets his 2nd you have to come back with a post, though.

If SCU gets 15 min out of Ndumanya in the 2nd half and have him in the game down the stretch, think they’ve got a real shot at this.

on January 27, 2017

Vegas always knows what they are doing. Haha.

on January 27, 2017

But agree.
