I would say a C is fair. I don’t recall being blown out as many times as we were this year, and losing with a weak non-conference schedule was very disappointing. We did have a couple of short streaks in league where we looked good though. Unfortunately, the last game with Pepperdine was uninspiring, to say the least. All that being said, as simple as it sounds, Herb can’t get out there and play for the team. Basically, we had open shots all season. When we made them, we won. When we didn’t (most of the season), we lost. I think a coach can only put his players in a position to win-they have to execute. Of course there is the mystery of the short bench and why Roche, Shaq and perhaps Turner didn’t see more time…but I have to assume Herb knows a lot more than we do from practice every day, attitudes, etc..So I trust he knows what he is doing. Yes, 20 losses and the manner in which we lost many games is tough to take, but I am hopeful the incoming class (and the one after that) will elevate us considerably. Also, I think Herb is a smart, classy coach and I like his demeanor on the sideline-he is not going to embarrass us.
On another subject if the Zags and BYU jump to the MWC, the conference tournament will be in trouble as it is packed with Zag fans and the second most in attendance are the BYU fans (they are by far the least friendly fans in the WCC by the way). Anyway I hope GU stays put, but it sounds like they might go.
